Improving Lives is charity based in Nottingham City. We offer support to people with complex health and social needs to enable them to manage the challenges they face more effectively. The people we work with have mental health issues combined with issues such as housing, debt, physical health problems, offending and domestic abuse. We offer one to one support for 12- 18 months and also a range of groups where people can meet with their peers to socialise (we currently have a walking group, art group, craft group and pool group). We also have a faith-based project for supporting, primarily, older people.
We have several projects for men and women, who range in age from 23 to 101. We visit people at home as well as meeting them in the community or at our office.
There would be the opportunity to work alongside our support workers to visit people at home to determine their needs and offer support and advice as well as making referrals to other relevant agencies. In the past we have had social work students and we would welcome students from a variety of other disciplines to bring a new perspective to our team.
Our work would offer a learning opportunity for students who would like to gain knowledge about health inequalities and how these impact on peoples' lives. In particular would welcome OTs, dietitians, physiotherapists and art therapists who are interested in mental health and would like to use their time with us for direct one to one or group work.
Our Interim CEO is also an approved mental health professional and would be able to offer a placement for paramedics who would like to gain insight into the work of mental health services.
Competencies you can develop on this placement:
- Communicating public health information
- Relationship-building and collaborative working
- Understanding of relevant legislation, policies and safe practice
- Delivering public health initiatives
